Not long ago a very insightful thread on the decline of Jehovah's Witnesses in Japan was posted. Our Barbara Anderson, possible san (a Japanese ex-jw), and others offered revealing thoughts.

japan and looting.
you will see report after report with the same theme -- virtually little to no looting.. now note this, from wiki: about 70 percent of japanese profess no religious membership, according to johnstone (1993:323), 84% of the japanese claim no personal religion.. is it possible that a country that is so devoid of religion to have such a high degree of respect for the belongings of their fellow citizens?.

Yes, DGP, I drive one (a Toyota Avalon) and thankfully it has not "run away" from me yet. Probably the best made vehicle I've owned.
I just browsed the WT Library, 2010, and the last mention of Japan in yearbooks is 1998. That article did not focus on current statistics and progress but rather the history of JWs from the early 50s till then.

seems that the gb take every story they can in the bible and claim that although it happened then, it will also happen now.
although this time it will be the gb who is jehosophat, david, paul, jermiah... etc etc take your pick.
what scriptual basis do they have for this belief??
Came the year 1925 and the fourth angelic trumpeter stood poised for action. His trumpet was blown and a third of the sun, moon and stars were smitten and darkened. (Rev. 8:12) During a regional convention at Indianapolis, Indiana, on August 24-31, 1925, God’s servants heartily endorsed a resolution under the title "Message of Hope." It made loving expressions, but also showed that the people had fallen into darkness in Christendom, which claims to be the world’s spiritual light. Yearbook, 1975, p. 137 Part 2--United States of America
In the place of that horrible darkness in Christendom, those conventioneers were looking forward to the wonderful light of true Christianity that was only 5 weeks away:
"The year 1926 would therefore begin about October first, 1925. We should, therefore, expect shortly after 1925 to see the awakening of Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Melchisedec, Job, Moses, Samuel, David, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, John the Baptist, and others mentioned in the eleventh chapter of Hebrews. ... No doubt many boys and girls who read this book will live to see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Daniel, and those other men of old come forth in the glory of their better resurrection, of perfect in mind and body. It will not take long for Christ to appoint them to their post of honor and authority as his earthly representatives. The world and all the present conveniences will seen strange to them at first, but they will soon become accustomed to the new methods. They may have some amusing experiences at first; for they never saw telephones, radios, automobiles, electric lights, aeroplanes, steam engines, and many other things so familiar to us." The Way to Paradise, 1924 pp.224,226
How memorable, indeed.

A large number of prophecies had their initial application or fulfillment on the contemporary people, many prophecies expressing God’s judgment on fleshly Israel and surrounding nations and foretelling Israel and Judah’s overthrow and subsequent restoration. Yet these prophecies did not lose their value for later generations, as for the Christian congregation, either in the first century C.E. or in our own time. The apostle says: "For all the things that were written aforetime were written for our instruction, that through our endurance and through the comfort from the Scriptures we might have hope." (Ro 15:4) Insight, Vol 2 p. 692 Prophecy
That's our position about the matter and we're sticking to it -- The Rules Committee.

ProdigalSon: What part of "nor will occur again" leaves any room for any "antitypical fulfillment"?
That's an exception to the rules -- The Rules Committee. By the way, we're the rules committee and we just made that one up.

so a few months ago, a friend sent me an actual copy of finished mystery which was published in 1917 (not a pdf download... the actual book).
i must say, this was the most disturbing book i have ever had the displeasure of reading.
but i only read it because this was the main publication that was being distributed worldwide when jesus supposedly chose the watchtower in 1918 and i basically wanted to see for myself what jesus saw in the wt that would compel him to choose this religious corporation over all other religious denominations.. anyway, if anyone is interested in knowing the actual contents of this book, here are some bullet points i put together from some of the notes i took as i read the book:.
I just went over the 1917 version I have , and except for the illustrations , all was on point.
Thanks for that, I74.

Thanks to our friend Atlantis there is a well-organized collection of links to many early publications -- including The Finished Mystery, Vol 7 (this PDF may, or may not, be the same edition that Alfred so kindly reviewed).

I found the confirmation I wanted in Watchtower's own pages, same date of 1917.
It has been the privilege of the WATCH TOWER BIBLE AND TRACT SOCIETY since its organization to send out brethren designated as pilgrims, or lecturers, to proclaim this glorious message to those who have hearing ears. The Lord gave the harvest message to the Laodicean church, the faithful ones of whom compose the "feet members" of Christ; and he gave it through his especially chosen servant, according to his promise. (Matthew 24:45-47) All the "feet members" who are now engaged in proclaiming this precious message received their enlightenment by partaking of the "food" which the Lord sent through his chosen servant. THE WATCH TOWER unhesitatingly proclaims Brother Russell as "that faithful and wise servant." He delivered the message faithfully, finished his course and has now entered into his reward. Through him the Lord gave to the church the message that is so essential to each one who in this harvest time would win the glorious prize.
The WATCH TOWER and Herald of Christ's Presence, March 1, 1917
I love Rutherford's endorsement there of Russell, "unhesitatingly proclaims" -- nothing quiet or private there.
The above is a transcription where I copied from an electronic copy, corrected the OCR errors, and presented it here. I'd rather see a good-quality scanned copy. Hi Alfred,
What a great amount of work that you've done in order to summarize it for us. Thank you very much.
I enjoyed point number 1, "Charles Taze Russell is the faithful and wise servant (p.4)"
That point confirms a great Watchtower teaching flip-flop. The say the following about that teaching:
*** jv chap. 28 p. 626 Testing and Sifting From Within *** . In 1881, Brother Russell himself had expressed the view that that "servant" was made up of the entire body of faithful spirit-anointed Christians. He saw it as being a collective servant, a class of persons who were united in doing God’s will. (Compare Isaiah 43:10.) This understanding was reaffirmed by the Bible Students in 1927.
Of course, what they cleverly neglect to disclose to the modern flock is that there was this in-between belief that Russell was, by Watchtower teaching, the "slave". Oh, they kind of quietly allude to it, saying to the effect that he admitted it, but only in private conversations. I'd like to shout (if we can get double-confirmation on that point number 1 above) that this 1917 publication (under Rutherford's control, Rutherford's ratification of Russell's belief) that Russell himself was certified as the discreet slave for some period of time.
This, in effect, gives us another instance of their growing list of teaching flip-flops.
